Nedap receives Red Dot Design Award

On Tuesday, 04 July 2017.

Today, Nedap was presented with the Red Dot Design Award for its ‘MidRanger’. The MidRanger, introduced by Nedap Library Solutions in 2016, is designed for the easy and remote scanning of RFID-labels of library books and other types of media. The Red Dot Design Award is the most prestigious international award in the field of industrial design. The award was handed to the Nedap-team at the Red Dot Gala in Essen, Germany. The international jury praised the MidRanger’s design, user-friendliness and robust character.

Fluent design

Nedaps MidRanger has a slim and fluent design, making it very easy to use by librarians and visitors. Erik Veurman, head of Industrial Design at van Nedap Library Solutions: “Winning the Red Dot Design Award really is a crowning achievement for our team. In our view, libraries should be a place where people feel at home and have very easy access to books and other types of media. Our MidRanger is designed to do just that. It can be used to scan an entire stack of books at once and check them in or out.  The durable materials allow for extensive use by thousands of people a day.

Key place of discovery

The jury of the Red Dot Design Award extensively praised the MidRanger: “The MidRanger RFID reader embodies the idea of the library as a key place of discovery in an impressive manner. Featuring a clear and high-quality design, it simplifies the process of borrowing and returning media. The reader is astonishingly simple to use and gives positive, immediate feedback. The process remains transparent. The device can be used in various settings and is highly robust, yet aesthetically appealing.” The MidRanger is part of a new line of products that improve the service and security of libraries. It offers an innovative detection antenna and a SelfServer, especially designed to simplify the check-in and check-out process of smaller libraries. Both products have the same design characteristics as the MidRanger.

About the Red Dot Design Award

In order to appraise the diversity in the field of design in a professional manner, the Red Dot Design Award breaks down into the three disciplines of Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept. The Red Dot Award is organised by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen and is one of the world’s largest design competitions. In 1955, a jury convened for the first time to assess the best designs of that time. In the 1990s, Red Dot CEO Professor Dr. Peter Zec developed the name and brand of the award. Ever since, the sought-after Red Dot award has been the revered international seal of outstanding design quality. More information is available at
